New PMBOK Guide 6th Edition Changes

New PMBOK Guide 6th Edition

PMI has informed that the PMBOK Guide 6th edition will be published in Q3 2017, and PMP Exam will change in 2018. Till that date, PMP exam will be conducted from PMBOK 5th edition. After every five years, PMI introduces a new version of the PMBOK Guide. Existing PMBOK Guide 5th edition was published in 2013, and thus PMBOK Guide 6th edition is due during 2018. PMBOK training may be attended accordingly

PMBOK Guide 5th edition is presently being examined and restructured, and PMBOK Guide 6th edition is expected to be released during Q3 2017. Usually, there is a cushion period of six months, before the new PMBOK Guide is introduced for the PMP exam. Thus, PMP exam may be conducted from PMBOK Guide 6th edition during mid 2018.

Major Changes in PMBOK Guide

Agile has been introduced in the PMBOK Guide. All PMBOK knowledge areas will include a section named Approaches for Agile, Iterative and Adaptive Environments, which will illustrate how these methodologies may be incorporated in projects. An appendix will further explain their details.

Business knowledge has been highlighted, including details of business documents used in project management.

Schedule PMP Exam Change

PMP Exam mainly focuses on the PMBOK Guide. Therefore, the PMP exam may change from PMBOK Guide 5th edition to version 6 during Q1 of 2018, earliest January 2018. However, PMI may permit PMP exam based on PMBOK Guide 5th edition for six months, till June 2018, as per their tradition when a new version of PMBOK is published.

PMP Exam Training

If you desire to appear in the PMP exam before January 1, 2018, then PMBOK Guide 5th edition may be used for the PMP training, and if taking exam after January 1, 2018 then PMBOK Guide 6th edition may be used. However, it may be noted that few weeks post course study may be required for appearing in the PMP exam. Therefore, PMP exam classes may be attended accordingly, and PMP certification exam dates requested appropriately.

11. A strategy has been introduced in the PMBOK Project Management Guide, to Escalate Responses, through which project manager will escalate a risk to higher authorities, when necessary, after which its responsibility has been transferred. At this stage, project manager will have following options:

  • a. Delete the risk from risk register maintained by project manager, or
  • b. Retain risk in the risk register, and categorize it as Escalated To.

12. Lessons Learned Register has been introduced, which will need to be frequently updated.

13. Tone in project management knowledge areas of the PMBOK Guide will become more optional, rather than mandatory.

14. Tools and Techniques will be grouped under individual labels.

15. Appendix will be included in the PMBOK Guide containing summary information regarding:

  • a. Key Concepts
  • b. Tailoring Aspects
  • c. Tools and Techniques
  • d. Iterative and Adaptive Approaches

16. PMBOK training should include above mentioned changes in the PMBOK Guide 6th Edition, which is expected to be released in the end of year 2017 or early 2018.

Main Changes in PMBOK 5th Edition during 2018

The following changes in PMBOK will be made in early 2018:

1. Processes will increase from 47 to 49.

2. Following processes will be added:

a. Manage Project Knowledge

b. Control Resources

c. Implement Risk Responses

3. Close Procurements process has been eliminated, and its purpose merged into the process

a. Close Project or Phase

4. Names of following PMBOK Knowledge Areas will be changed:

a. Existing Project Human Resource Management changed to Project Resource Management

b. Existing Project Time Management changed to Project Schedule Management

5. Names of following processes will be changed:

a. Perform Quality Assurance changed to Manage Quality

b. Plan Human Resource Management changed to Plan Resource Management

c. Acquire Project Team changed to Acquire Resources

d. Control Communications changed to Monitor Communications

e. Control Risks changed to Monitor Risks

f. Plan Stakeholder Management changed to Plan Stakeholder Engagement

g. Control Stakeholder Engagement changed to Monitor Stakeholder Engagement

6. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 will be combined into two chapters, and an additional Chapter 3 will be  added, named The Role of the Project Manager, where role of the Project Manager will be elaborated.

7. Representations will be introduced in the PMBOK 5th edition, which will distinguish between ongoing processes (continuously being performed), and the non-ongoing processes. This model will be highlighted for first time in PMBOK Guide.

8. Concept of project scope and product Scope will also be underlined in new PMBOK Guide.

9. Earned value technique in PMBOK Guide will incorporate Earned Schedule Management.

10. Communication, which is sharing information with persons, and Communications like emails, will be distinguished from each other.
